Canada to prosecute Rwandan accused of participation in genocide

The CBC reports that Désiré Munyaneza is accused of “raping and murdering people in the southern Butare province of Rwanda. The charges against him mark the first time the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act has been used since it was enacted five years ago.”

Munyaneza was living in Toronto, where other members of the Rwandan immigrant community recognized him.

It’s good to see this commitment to justice from our northern neighbors. I wish the US had a law similar to Canada’s.

While on the CBC site, I also found an interesting page with background information on war crimes and international justice. There’s an especially worthwhile two-part article on the development of the International Criminal Court.
